We have revamped the Microgen Scotland website which was in need of a makeover having changed little since it was set up in 2007.
As well as redesigning the look of the site, seven years of weekly news needed to be included in the new site. As these pages ran on a bespoke system, there was no easy way to port them across in bulk to WordPress. We were able to set up a news archive template page to match the functionality of the old site, pulling in the required news page based on a url query variable. In addition, we replaced the previous single drop-down selector, which had become impossibly unwieldy, with a two-part process, splitting the week selector by year, bringing up the appropriate weekly drop-down after the year is selected.
In addition, a bespoke plugin was developed for the client to add their weekly news roundup. The plugin takes text pasted from Word and parses it, adding in all the html formatting for headlines, etc, and converting urls to “read more” links and posting it on the website. It also outputs separate formatted html code which can be used in a mailing list system.
The final stage of the revamp will be to add in a Google-based search system. The built-in WordPress search system is quite limited and only searches the database of Posts and Pages, so would not search the news archive of separate non-database files.
